Capitalization is not required. For example, computer will retrieve computer, Computer and COMPUTER.
For umlauts, type either ä, ö, ü or ae, oe, ue. Typing ss will also retrieve ß and vice versa.
The system assumes that you are searching for records that contain all the words you have entered. Usually, there is no need to combine words by AND.
Use OR to include alternative search terms. For example, search for records containing either heart or cardiac or both by typing heart or cardiac. (heart or cardiac) and surgery will retrieve all records containing either the words heart and surgery or the words cardiac and surgery.
Use NOT if you wish to exclude specific terms from your search. For example, potter NOT harry.
Use the ? character to replace any number of characters in a word or string. For example, gun? will retrieve gun, guns, gunners, gunnery, gunning, etc. In another example, ? ology will retrieve anthropology, archaeology, psychology, etc. The ? character may also be used to find variant spellings. For example, alumi?m will find both the American spelling, aluminum, and the British spelling, aluminium.
